The laser welding technique allows metals weld by the non-standard laser technology features: due to high energy density and fineness of the laser beam, targeted areas melt down and then are quickly welded by cooling. As a result, a strong welding is complete on a reduced surface area.

Benefits of this technique make laser solution for metals welding applications a must: with or without filler materials, little or no buckling, high welding speed, excellent fineness, welding solidity and process reproducibility. Moreover, compared to conventional techniques, metals with high melting point or high heat conductivity can be weld by using the laser technology.

Parts configurations for laser welding

For plastics laser welding, welding is achieved by transparency: two materials are bunk; one is transparent to laser radiation, the other absorbent. The laser beam, focalized at the junction, passes through transparent material and melts the absorbent piece. Plastics welding is done by the solid connection between the two materials after fast cooling.

Lasers offer a wide range of welding or brazing (laser welding with filler material) methods: spot welding, hybrid welding (i.e. combining laser welding and one other welding process, laser and plasma as example), heat conduction welding, scanner welding, etc. Laser welding is currently used by industries for its quality, its high speed and reliable process, its negligible collateral effects on materials and its versatility. Among the industries interested in this innovative technology: the medical sector, the watch making and jewellery sector, the electronic and connector sector, the aerospace sector, the shipbuilding sector and the automotive sector.

For the manufacture of its laser welding machines for plastics and metals, ES TECHNOLOGY integrates the most advanced laser technology: the fiber laser sources. Thanks to their characteristics, these sources are unavoidable as laser welding tools: easy to integrate, flexibility, stability, fast and automatized beam deflection, remote or robotized welding process, long lifetime, etc. Moreover, the good beam quality (thickness of laser spot, high energy density, excellent beam profile, etc.) obtained by these sources allow surface laser welding (i.e. weld depth from 0.1 to 1 mm) and deep penetration welding (up to few cm).

Depending on the welding application and materials, fiber laser source can emit continuous or discontinuous (pulsed laser) beam, with an average power between 20 W and several tens of kW, as for deep steel welds (25 mm) with 25 kW in automotive industries. Finally, metals or plastics laser welding can be made by single mode or multimode fiber lasers. Single mode fiber lasers (ten of µm of optical core, high energy density and thick Gaussian spatial profile) are used for fine or remote welding, due to the focal length. Multimode fiber lasers (tens to hundreds of optical core) have lower optical intensity and uniform energy distribution (“top hat”). They are thus used for volume or shallow laser welding, and to prevent materials degradation due to high energy (vaporization).
